Practice Tips

We have a very fast summer swim season!  Therefore, it is important to remember the following to make the most of our practice time:

  • Arrive 10 minutes EARLY.  We know things happen, but swimmers have to get undressed, sunscreened, goggles and caps on, say hello to everyone, get focused etc.  If you are rolling through the door right at practice time each day, your swimmer will likely miss a lot.
  • EAT breakfast! and bring a full water bottle (or whatever non-caffeinated liquid your swimmer will drink). Swimmers need a lot of energy, and they do not realize how much they sweat due to the coolness of the water. Please remind your swimmer to drink each day! Please also have them eat a healthy breakfast. Swimmers will burn through a ton of calories. If your swimmer is grumpy, they likely need to eat, drink, and rest more.
  • Come ready to swim and willing to listen to coaches.  When coaches correct the athletes, it is to improve their strokes and make them better swimmers. We strive to do this in a positive and fun way.  Please discuss this with your swimmer! Please also reach out to coaches or the swim coordinator with any questions or concerns!
  • Please communicate to coaches before or after practice time, if possible. During practice they are concentrating not only on the skills but also the safety of the swimmers, so limiting distractions during practice time is key.
  • Bring a  FUN attitude! We use a lot of games to get the swimmers warmed up and moving, and we are very proud of our Froggie spirit at North Hills!
  • Get good sleep!  Summer is sometimes one big party for the kids--nothing wrong with that!  But swimming is very strenuous activity.  Their muscles will burn glucose and repair themselves for many hours after practice or a meet.  Make sure they are eating, drinking, and getting enough rest to be their best!
  • Be patient and keep at it. It can take years to fully master the swim strokes. Encourage your swimmer even for small wins! We will focus on basic good technique, but again-we have a short season.   Review all the tips above to make sure you are giving your swimmer the best opportunity to absorb all they can from each practice!
